Today was supposed to be co-op day, but it snowed a bunch, so we’re having a snow day. Now, we’re still going to make them do a little work, but this is one of the joys of homeschooling. We get to play! We can be flexible with our schedule. And, don’t tell the kids this, we can make them do some work even when the public school kids are off. I was going to title this episode The Importance of Laughter In Your Homeschool, but in honor of our first snow day of the year, it’s Snow Day!
It’s so easy to get too serious about homeschooling. You’ve got to learn your math facts! Clean the house! Read your history! You’re two months behind and we’re only one week into the school year! That’s how some days feel, isn’t it?
Do you remember the story of Mary and Martha? You know the story in the Bible (Luke 10:38-42) about the two sisters and Jesus. Martha is rushing around trying to clean up while lazy Mary is just sitting at Jesus’ feet. Martha complains to Jesus, saying, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
I get it. Homeschooling is a challenge. It’s a huge responsibility. Like the new iPhone 6, it’s HUUUUUUGE! But, we need to keep the joy in our homeschools – in our homes, or we might as well just stuff the kids in public school and re-join the rat race.
One family got so sick of the rat race, they tried exploring other educational options, and their story is told in the new movie, Class Dismissed.
